Displayed is a pair of Hall of Fame right-hander Gaylord Perry's San Francisco Giants' Wilson spikes, which show super use and were probably worn for an entire season or more. Perry pitched for eight Major League teams in a career from 1962-83, starting with the San Francisco Giants (1962-71) and finishing with the Kansas City Royals. He was the first pitcher in history to win Cy Young Awards in both leagues. Gaylord and his older brother, Jim Perry, are the first brothers to both win 200 games in the Major Leagues, and the only brothers to have each won a Cy Young Award. Gaylord had a lifetime 314-265 record with a 3.11 ERA. Gaylord is infamous for being repeatedly accused of doctoring pitches with "foreign substances" such as Vaseline. His autobiography, written with Bob Sudyk, is titled, Me and the Spitball. However, Perry was not thrown out of a game for doctoring a baseball until 1982. His frequent catcher while Perry was with the Oakland Athletics, Gene Tenace, does provide some anecdotal evidence of Perry's spitball or Vaseline use: "I can remember a couple of occasions when I couldn't throw the ball back to him because it was so greasy that it slipped out of my hands. I just walked out to the mound and flipped it back to him," said Tenace. Perry passed away in 2022. In 2016, outside of the Giants' stadium, a statue of Gaylord Perry was prominently placed. The offered spikes are originally from Perry, via the Ohio Baseball Hall of Fame. The number 36 is written in black marker inside of each tongue. The right spike has a custom leather reinforced pitcher's toe. No size for the spikes is visible, but the spikes seem to be approximately size 11. The super use includes creases, scuffs, and even dirt on the spikes.
