Displayed is a pair of circa 1950s Robin Roberts Philadelphia Phillies game worn spikes. The Hall of Fame pitcher played 19 Major League seasons: Philadelphia Phillies (1948-61), Baltimore Orioles (1962-65), Houston Astros (1965-66), Chicago Cubs (1966). Roberts played both baseball and basketball at Michigan State University. He was one of the famed 1950 NL pennant-winning Philadelphia Phillies, known as the Whiz Kids for the team's many young players. Roberts was a 7-time All-Star, a 4-time MLB wins leader, and a 2-time MLB strikeouts leader. He had a 286-245 career record, with a 3.41 ERA and 2,357 strikeouts. Roberts was a workhorse, and from July 1952 to June 1953, he threw an astounding 28 complete games in a row. From 1950-55, he won at least 20 games each season. Jackie Robinson faced Roberts many times in key games, and the great Dodgers infielder said of Roberts, "You can't hit him when it counts. He's one of the toughest competitors in the business." Roberts' favorite pitch was his fastball. Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner said, "Probably the best fastball I ever saw was Robin Roberts'." The offered spikes show great use, with scuffs and abrasions. The spikes come from the Paul Hill Collection. Paul was an early collector of game used items, and he got all his stuff from the players. on the tongue of each shoe is a punch stamp showing Riddell as the manufacturer. No size is visible on the spikes, but each spike measures 12.25" from the toe tip to the heel. The right spike has a pitcher's toe, slightly detached from obvious extensive use. The spikes have 36 (Roberts' number) written in black marker by an unknown hand, inside each tongue. Paul Hill's small tag inside the left spike has Robin Roberts written on it. The offering comes with a 1959 Robin Roberts Topps card (#352), measuring 2.5x3.5" and in fine condition. The game worn spikes make a great remembrance of Roberts because the terrific wear, particularly on the right spike, is tangible evidence of Roberts' all-out pitching effort.
