Displayed is a circa 1950 charming, yet poignant, rare Type I snapshot photograph of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson Sr. with his son, Jackie Robinson Jr., on his back. It appears they are visiting a store or exhibit. Jackie (Junior) was born on Nov. 9, 1946, just over five months before his father would break the modern Major League color line on April 15, 1947. Of course, the elder Robinson was an immediate sensation as a Major Leaguer, as he was the '47 National League Rookie of the Year, batting .297 and leading the NL in stolen bases (29). Robinson was the NL MVP in '49, leading the NL in both batting (.342) and stolen bases (37). Robinson was a 7-time All-Star in his ten-year Major League career, all with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was a part of six pennant winners and the 1955 World Champions. He batted a career .311. Jackie Robinson Jr. struggled in school, and he dropped out of high school in his senior year and joined the U.S. Army. He served in Vietnam and was wounded by shrapnel when he was attempting to save the life of another soldier. After his discharge from the Army, Jackie Jr. returned to his home in Connecticut but became addicted to drugs, a problem that his parents thought began during his tour of duty in Vietnam. Jackie Jr. battled his addiction at Daytop Village and eventually became as assistant regional director of the facility. He died as the result of a car accident on June 17, 1971, just over 16 months before Jackie Sr. died of complications from diabetes. The offered photo measures approx. 3.75x5". A yellow piece of tape or paper, measuring approx. 0.25x3.8", is affixed to the bottom left of the photo. This piece of tape or paper shows hand printing, in blue ink, written in an unknown hand, reading, "Jackie Robinson + Jr - M. Suess." The photo has a small tear in the upper right corner but, except for the above-mentioned labeling and the small tear, is in otherwise nice condition. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified Type I AUTHENTIC.
