Displayed is a fascinating collection of ten (10) black & white movie still photos that were shot circa 1950 during the filming of The Jackie Robinson Story. Jackie Robinson played himself in the picture, and he received kudos for his performance. Ruby Dee played Rae Robinson, Jackie's wife. Minor Watson had the role of Branch Rickey, the Brooklyn Dodgers co-owner and chief baseball executive who planned and executed Robinson's breaking of the modern Major League Color Line in 1947. Kenny Washington, who starred with Jackie Robinson on the UCLA football team, played a baseball manager. Much of the film was shot at Gilmore Field, the home of the Pacific Coast League Hollywood Stars. The film was produced by Mort Brisken and William Heineman, in conjunction with Jewel Productions and United Artists. The movie covered Robinson's early years, his years in the U.S. Army in World War II, his time in the Negro American League with the Kansas City Monarchs, his year with the minor league Montreal Royals, and his breaking of the Major League Color Line with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Film critic Bosley Crowther wrote highly of Jackie Robinson's performance as an actor: "... (Robinson) displays a calm assurance and composure that might be envied by many a Hollywood star." The offered stills measure 8x10". They have all been encapsulated and each PSA Certified as Type I AUTHENTIC. Five of the stills include Jackie Robinson, sometimes with other actors or movie makers and sometimes alone. One of the stills shows Robinson and Kenny Washington. Another still shot has Robinson with Ruby Dee. Robinson appears in a shot with his "film mother," Louise Beavers. Other shots show the Producer Mort Brisken, director Alfred E. Green, and various actors. The still shots are in excellent condition, and they provide a riveting behind-the-scenes look at the making of this film about a great ballplayer who changed the history of civil rights in America.
