Displayed is a 1965-69 Ralph Kiner game used bat that was most likely used in Old Timers' Day games by the Hall of Fame slugger. Kiner played outfield in the Major Leagues from 1946-55: Pittsburgh Pirates (1946-53), Chicago Cubs (1953-54), Cleveland Indians (1955). Bothered by a chronically bad back that kept getting worse as his career progressed, Kiner could only play ten Major League seasons. "Home run hitters drive Cadillacs, and singles hitters drive Fords," was a quote attributed to Kiner, but Ralph stated that it originated with Pittsburgh teammate Fritz Ostenmueller. In any event, Kiner stated the quote numerous times, and he swung for the fences as if he believed it with all his heart. Kiner hit 369 home runs, and he led the NL in home runs for seven years in a row (1946-52). Despite all of his home runs, Kiner wasn't getting the salary he felt he deserved from the Pirates, and when Kiner was denied a real raise, Pirates general manager Branch Rickey famously told Kiner, "We finished last with you. We can finish last without you." Kiner became one of three original New York Mets broadcasters in 1962, and continued broadcasting, as essentially a guest in his final seasons, until his demise in 2013. The offered bat is a Hillerich & Bradsby Model K55. It has a length of 35.0" and a weight of 30.7 ounces. The ash wood bat has a standard finish. Etched into the barrel is "GENUINE KINER LOUISVILLE SLUGGER." The knob has an etched "K55" and "KINER" hand printed with a fine tip black marker. Approx. 11" of white tape are wrapped around the bottom of the label and the tape continues until about 9.5" from the knob. The bat is uncracked and shows heavy use. The use would have occurred from Kiner's participation in Old Timers' Games. The bat comes with a PSA/DNA LOA.
