Displayed is a game used Dick Groat bat employed by the Hall of Fame shortstop at some point during the 1965-67 seasons. Groat was a marvelous two-way athlete who was an All-American at Duke University in both baseball and basketball. He played Major League baseball for 14 seasons: (Pittsburgh Pirates 1952 & 1955-62), St. Louis Cardinals (1963-65), Philadelphia Phillies (1966-67), and San Francisco Giants (1967). Groat also played in the NBA for the Fort Wayne Pistons during the 1952-53 season, averaging 11.9 PPG as a point guard, before leaving in mid-season to join the U.S. Army. Upon his release from the Army two years later, Pirates' executive Branch Rickey told Groat that his NBA days were over. "I never would have given up basketball, but if I played, I would have lost my bonus," explained Groat. An 8-time All-Star, Groat helped to lead the Pirates to the World's Championship in 1960, as he hit an NL-leading .325, winning the NL MVP. Groat had 2,138 hits in his career, for a lifetime batting average of .286. Groat was also an important member of the 1964 World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. From 1979-80 through 2018-19, Groat was the radio color analyst of the Pittsburgh University Panthers. The offered bat is a Hillerich & Bradsby Model Number K55. It is unclear for which team or teams Groat used the bat. It has a labeling period of 1965-67, so Groat could have used the bat with the Cardinals, Phillies, Giants, or some combination of the aforementioned teams. An ash bat with a standard finish, it measures 35.0" in length and has a weight of 33.6 ounces. The bat is uncracked, with light to moderate use. The bat comes with a PSA/DNA LOA, certification: 1B29816. The game-used Groat bat makes a wonderful sports memento, as it was used by one of only 13 athletes in history, - including Dave DeBusschere, Gene Conley, and Chuck Connors - to have played in both Major League Baseball and the NBA.
