Cincinnati Reds road jersey worn by journeyman outfielder Pete Whisenant during the club's 1961 pennant-winning season. The gray flannel vest-style jersey is lettered "Cincinnati" across the front and features the number 27 on both the left breast and reverse. All letters and numerals are applied in red on black tackle twill. A "MacGregor 44" label appears in the collar. Located on the interior left front tail is a flag tag that reads "Set 1 1961." The jersey is original as issued and displays moderate use. It should be noted that both Pete Whisenant and Harry Anderson wore number 27 in 1961. Whisenant played in 26 games with the Reds in 1961 before being released in August, while Anderson appeared in 4 games. Since both players were similar in height and weight, it is probable that each player wore the offered jersey during the course of the year. Accompanied by a vintage Wilson "Duofold" Cincinnati Reds undershirt (light use with a few small insect holes). The undershirt cannot be attributed to a specific player, but it is perfect for display with the jersey. Led on offense by National League MVP Frank Robinson, the Cincinnati Reds won 93 games in 1961 and captured the National League pennant for the first time since 1940. Unfortunately, they were matched with the legendary 1961 New York Yankees in the World Series, who defeated the Reds in five games. Jerseys dating from pennant-winning seasons have always been highly prized by collectors and this is an outstanding example from the Reds' 1961 National League championship year.
