File copy of military travel orders, dated September 17, 1945, for Moe Berg and Swiss physicist Paul Scherrer to travel from Paris, France, to Geneva, Switzerland, "on or about September 18, 1945." The orders are marked "Restricted" on both the top and bottom, and the order is "By Command of General Eisenhower." Berg, who was a former Major League catcher, served during World War II as a spy with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which was the forerunner to the CIA. Berg was later assigned to the OSS' Project Larson, which was involved in the recruiting of Italian physicists to leave their country and come work in the United States. During that project, he became close with Paul Scherrer, one of Switzerland's top physicists. It was through Scherrer that Berg obtained important information regarding the German physicists and the progress of their nuclear program. The document (8x10.5"), which is lightly toned, displays a moderate vertical fold and a tiny edge tear along the left border.
