Offered is the most unique and interesting Gil Hodges item we have ever offered: Hodges' handwritten spring-training schedule for a New York Mets' pitchers and catchers practice. Written in blue ink on a lined legal page, Hodges has outlined the agenda for "Feb 21 Sunday." Hodges came up through the Brooklyn Dodgers farm system, which was developed by Branch Rickey. As we see here, he incorporates some of the training methods used by the Dodgers, including Rickey's famous "string" drill for pitchers. In addition to individual drills, the schedule also includes a special pitchers game, with "No Throwing," and special baserunning rules. Although just the date is listed, Hodges was the Mets manager from 1968 until his untimely death on April 2, 1972. During that span, the only year in which February 21st, fell on a Sunday was 1971, thereby conclusively dating the piece. This sheet originates directly from the Hodges family and is accompanied by one-page signed letter of provenance from Hodges daughter, Barbara Lynn-Hodges. The sheet (8.5x14"; visible dimensions) is in apparent Excellent to Mint condition. It has been matted and framed with a black-and-white photo (modern print; 10x8") of Hodges with a trio Mets pitchers, including Tom Seaver, a 1969 New York Mets World Series patch, and a descriptive plaque. Total dimensions: 25x21". Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
