Boston Braves road uniform (jersey and pants) worn by Hall of Fame manager Billy Southworth in 1951. Billy Southworth jerseys are exceedingly rare. This is the first example we have ever offered and we can only recall having seen one other. The fact that this is a full uniform and dates from his final managerial season makes it especially significant.

The gray flannel zipper-front jersey is lettered "Braves" across the front and features the club's distinctive "Tomahawk" patch applied below. The number "30" is featured on the reverse. All letters and numerals are applied in red on black felt. A Braves team patch adorns the right sleeve, while a National League 75th Anniversary patch appears on the left sleeve. (Please note: the original anniversary patch was removed and later replaced with the current patch, which appears to be a modern example.) A Horace Partridge label and adjacent "44" size tag appear on the left front tail. Also on the left front tail, below the label, is a white strip tag with "Southworth. Mgr." chainstitched in red. Directly below is a smaller white strip tag bearing the year ('51) chainstitched in red. Aside from the anniversary patch having been restored, the jersey is original as issued. The waistband of the matching gray flannel pants features a white strip tag with "Southworth. Mgr." chainstitched in red. Directly below is a smaller white strip tag bearing the year ('51) chainstitched in red. Both the jersey and pants display moderate-to-heavy wear, including light staining throughout. The zipper on the jersey remains functional, but the zipper on the pants will no longer open or close.

Billy Southworth was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2008 and in the eyes of most historians that honor should have come much earlier. Southworth, who enjoyed an outstanding Major League career and finished with a .297 career average, won four pennants and two World Championships over the course of his thirteen managerial seasons (1929-1951). During that time he had six 90-win seasons and his lifetime winning percentage of .597 is fourth best all time among those who have managed in the Major Leagues for over ten years. 1951 was Southworth's final managerial season, making this uniform one of the last he ever wore in the Major Leagues. This is an outstanding example of one of the most elusive of all Hall of Famer jerseys.
