Cleveland Indians home jersey worn by pitcher Cal McLish during the 1958 season. The white pinstripe flannel jersey is lettered "Indians" across the front and features the number "22" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are applied in red on blue tackle twill. A "Wilson size 44" tag appears on the left front tail. Only a small remnant of the year tag remains in the collar. An Indians team patch adorns the left sleeve. Despite the absence of the year tag, this is a one-year style jersey that was worn by the club only in 1958. (1958 was the first year of pinstripes, but the following season the club added uniform numbers to the right sleeve. The offered jersey has no number on the right sleeve, nor is there any indication that a number has been removed.) Our consignor originally obtained the jersey shortly after the club retired it, and at the time he had it tailored to take in the sides slightly. Aside from that, and the missing year tag, the jersey is complete as issued. Heavy wear is displayed throughout, including moderate staining, slight tears to the stitching on the front lettering, and several small insect holes. Cal McLish was the ace of the Cleveland pitching staff in 1958, leading the club with 16 wins and an ERA of 2.99. Despite having a few successful seasons during his fifteen-year Major League career, McLish is best remembered today for his most unusual full name: Calvin Coolidge Julius Caesar Tukahoma McLish. This is a rare one-year style Cleveland flannel worn by one of the most memorable players on the club that season.
