Good photo of a Hall of Famer in his early years. Type I 8x10" photo. At Bugle Field, the Baltimore field that was the home turf of the Baltimore Elite Giants, long time Negro League team. The Elite Giants sent three great players on their way to the Major League Brooklyn Dodgers: Campanella, Joe Black, and Junior Gilliam. Campanella made the Hall of Fame, and Black and Gilliam won consecutive National League Rookie of the Year Awards for the Dodgers in 1952 and 1953 respectively. Pictured is Campanella being tutored in the art of catching by Clark. Roy must have been really paying attention because he took over the number one catching job from Clark in 1939, while Campy was still a teenager. Because of the infamous "color line," Campanella kept playing in the Negro and Mexican Leagues through 1945. Photo has staining in upper right corner; otherwise in good condition. Fresh discovery from former Negro League player.
