In 1912, Jack Johnson fled to France to escape doing jail time for violating the Mann Act. It was from Paris, France, that he penned this letter in April 1914, two months before the bout with Frank Moran. The letterhead is absolutely fantastic, featuring photos of both boxers and "Match Johnson-Moran Pour Le Championnat Du Monde...Bourse 200,000 Francs." Written to his trainer Watson Burns, the champ opens with "Dear Friend Watson," and mentions Negro league legend and baseball Hall of Famer Rube Foster. "Just read in the Chicago Defender where Rube Foster's players were shaving in Cal and couldn't get any games. That is what he gets for a pack of lies. You ought to know none of those spades around Chicago are going to do anything for me for nothing." Later, the brash and confident Johnson makes a prediction on his upcoming bout. "Am feeling fine and am sure Moran will be an easy victim." Signed "Jack Johnson...France." Written and signed in bold 9.5/10 purple ink. Customary folds and understandable handling wear.
