He was the starting quarterback and star player of Pittsburgh Panthers' football team which won back-to-back National Championships in 1936 and 1937. In the latter season he was also the team captain. At thirty-two, he became the NFL's youngest coach when took over at the helm for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1948. Later, he returned to his alma mater where he served as head coach for a decade. Midnight navy blue wool jacket with seven-snap button front has gold trimmed collar and sleeve cuff, with "Pitt Coach" on the verso, all sewn-on in gold tackle twill, and and “John” over the left chest in gold chain-link. Interior contains "Butwin" manufacturer'S label and a cloth tag (which has since come detached from the garment but is affixed by a safety pin to the inside of the button path) which reads "VX 469 F." The jacket shows fine wear while remaining in excellent condition.
