The 1980 team, comprised of a ragtag bunch of amateurs and unforgettably known as the "Miracle on Ice" team, pulled off one of the greatest upsets in the history of sports by defeating the Soviet Union in the tournament's semifinal before waltzing past Finland to capture the gold medal. While at the time mired in the Cold War with the U.S.S.R., the U.S. victory over their ostensibly unbeatable foe on the ice far transcended sports; it buoyed the spirits of an entire nation due to its real-world implications and historic improbability.
