Spectacular old scorecard from the National Association Champion 1872 Boston Red Stockings. The team was a reunion of the best players from the legendary 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings - the first openly all-professional team. Boston was led by George & Harry Wright, Barnes, Leonard, McVey, A.G. Spaulding (sic), Gould, Shafer and Birdsall, substituting for Rogers. The NA champs played the Middletown Mansfields, with rookie James O' Rourke in the first and only year in the league, plus star pitcher Asa Brainard, formerly of the 1869 Red Stockings. The game was played on June 15, 1872. The Red Stockings would finish with a 39-8 record to win their first ever championship.
