This Hillerich & Bradsby bat was game used by Roberto Clemente between 1969-70, just a few years before he died tragically in a plane crash while en route to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Clemente epitomized what it means for an athlete to be a role model. The Puerto Rican outfielder was a consummate professional, playing all 18 seasons of his Major League career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and racking up 12 All-Star Game selections, 12 Gold Glove awards, four NL batting championships and an NL MVP award. In addition to his on-field success, Clemente was a noted humanitarian. He was actively involved with charity work in Latin America and the Caribbean during his off seasons, frequently delivering baseball equipment and food to those in need. The bat shows outstanding use, with a handle crack that has been repaired, many ball marks visible on the barrel, and a heavy coat of pine tar on the handle. The model number (U1) is stamped on the knob alongside Clemente's number "21" and the letter "H." both handwritten. The ash bat measures 36" long and weighs 39.3 oz. It comes with a PSA GU 8.5 LOA. During the years the bat was used, Clemente put together two predictably stellar seasons, batting .345 and .352 in '69 and '70, respectively, and being named an All-Star and winning a Gold Glove both years.
