This magnificent silver charger was presented to Kareem Abdul Jabbar upon his retirement from basketball. The piece was presented directly to Kareem in Taipei at the July 30, 1989, exhibition game of former NBA Stars versus the Chinese National team. Kareem has had strong roots to China going back to his mentor/mentee relationship with world famous martial artist Bruce Lee. His popularity in the Asian world began with his appearance in the wildly successful 1972 Bruce Lee film “Game of Death," and the connection flourished through the years with his many trips to China as an informal cultural ambassador for the United States and the game of basketball. Embossed with flags of the two countries and the heartfelt words in English and Mandarin: "To: Mr. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Member of NBA, USA, The Brightest Star in the Universe of Professional Basketball, In Commemoration of his Farewell Game in the Republic of China From: J.T. Wang, President, Republic of China Basketball Association, July 30, 1989." This measures a masterful 18x18" overall in its original velvet-lined and covered case bathed in luxurious satin, and comes with a fingerprint COA from Abdul-Jabbar’s own firm and is signed by the NBA legend in Chinese (written in English characters) "Xiexie Zhongguo Abdul Jabbar." Interestingly, this translates to "Thank You China." There is no doubt that there is no other piece of Kareem’s in the world signed in just this manner, an incredibly important piece that bridges the worlds of sports and humanity.
