Offered here is no less than one of the finest bats in the entire collecting world, originally used by Ty Cobb and dated 1925. Before the use of model numbers became commonplace, manufacturers used the process of “Side Writing” – recording and marking a returned bat in grease pencil, and keeping them at the factory so that others like them could be created for the player. Though this Hillerich & Bradsby is from before model numbers were stamped on the bats, this is considered Cobb’s model, C28, and this bat must have been a favorite of Cobb's as he sent it back to the H&B factory in 1925 and the return information "Ty Cobb 5-29-2_" can be seen in grease pencil on the side of the barrel. It has been concluded that the year, although not clearly visible, is 1925 as the month (5) and date (29th) are recorded in the H&B factory records as when Cobb returned this very bat. It exhibits great use and displays Ty Cobb player characteristics such as spike marks on the barrel, and there is a slight crack on the back of the barrel repaired with three small nails, along with ball marks and grain swelling from repeated hits. Amazingly, the labeling period of the bat is from 1919-1922, so the Georgia Peach clearly had this around for a long time. We are not suggesting that he used it for that many years, but he obviously held it in high favor because he retained it and finally sent it back to the factory after it cracked. This masterpiece displays beautiful wood, rich patina, and clear stampings; only can only imagine how many hits Cobb got with this. It has been given a perfect GU 10 by PSA, one of the finest of any game used bats from any player to ever be offered.
