One of baseball's biggest on-field tragedies occurred during the 1967 season when star Boston outfielder Tony Conigliaro was hit in the face by an errant Jack Hamilton pitch, shattering his cheekbone, dislocating his jaw and severely injuring his eye. Though he would return to play for several years, he was never the same, his eyesight eventually deteriorated and he died at the too-young age of 45. During his first full season of 1965, the local boy from Revere, Massachusetts became the youngest player in American League history to win a home run title, and he reached 100 career home runs faster than any other AL player. That all changed on August 18, 1967, in a seemingly routine game against the California Angels at Fenway Park.
