The second complete set of this stunning pair of period commercial statues we have seen, these are pure magnificence in high quality spelter and were done at the time of the historic bout in San Francisco on September 7, 1892 at the Olympic Club in New Orleans. World Heavyweight Champion John L. Sullivan was dethroned by upstart scientific fighter Gentleman Jim Corbett in the first gloved fight of its kind in history. Both fighters are shown here in stunning full boxing poses in stupendous detail. Both are bare-fisted pugilists sporting vintage boxing shoes and togs of the late 19th century. The magnificent, ornately-designed base has intriguing boxing scenes surrounding the perimeter, and it's signed on the base by the German artist "Waagen." This is the nicest known pair we have seen and the ONLY ONES that still have the original wood bases. Beautifully aged patina and no defects make these unimprovable. Each is about 27" tall, one of the finest boxing display pieces you will ever see. They are worthy of building a room around or turning a hobby room into your own 19th century sporting club.
