John Henry's racing career spanned over six years - a rare feat among thoroughbreds. Along the way, the gelding amassed 39 wins and $6,591,860 in earnings. He was twice voted the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year (in 1981 and 1984), with his 1981 selection the only time in history in which the victor received all votes cast for that award. In all, he snagged seven Eclipse awards. John Henry was also ranked #23 in Blood Horse's list of the top 100 U.S. racehorses of the 20th century. At the age of 10, John Henry was retired by his owner Sam Rubin and sent to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, a retirement facility for thoroughbreds, where he lived until his death in 2007 - at the ripe age of 32. This is the gray blanket with green lettering that was made for him upon his arrival at the Kentucky Horse Park, where he lived out his days after his racing career concluded, and was also worn while parading at Keeneland Race Course.
