This is the early 20th Century version of "We're #1." The Boston Americans - precursors to the Red Sox - won the first World Series in 1903, and may have won it in 1904 but the National League champion New York Giants refused to play them. Boston laid claim to the title heading into the 1905 season, and that self-proclaimed title is reflected in this super-rare poster that is copyright 1904 By Pictoral Publishing Co. of Boston, Mass. The large 19" x 23.5" poster on heavy paper stock proclaims: "BOSTON BASE BALL CLUB OF THE AMERICAN LEAGUE THE WORLD'S CHAMPIONS 1904-1905" although the Giants would wind up "dethroning" Boston by defeating the Philadelphia Athletics in the 2005 Fall Classic. 18 players are featured in vignettes with Jimmy Collins, the team captain and manager in the center. The great Cy Young is also singled out in the upper-left. There is some light toning to the lower portion of the poster, plus some creasing and repaired tears, which technically makes the condition GD although it presents much better.
