Before he ever set foot on a racetrack, super stallion Fusaichi Pegasus was branded racing's next superstar. And the brilliant offspring lived up to that haughty billing by winning the Kentucky Derby in 2000 amidst a star-studded field that included Aptitude, Captain Steve, War Chant, Trippi and Graeme Hall among others. Just prior to his championship at Churchill, "Fu-Peg," as he was known, laid the groundwork by capturing the Grade 1 Wood Memorial by over four lengths. Offered here in all its glory is the actual saddle cloth he wore in his second-place finish to Red Bullet in the second jewel of racing's Triple Crown - the Preakness. Measuring 43" x 38", the orange cloth with black border has "PREAKNESS" stitched on both sides in black and white, along with the number 7 in black and the horse's name heat-pressed in white. When his racing career was over, Fusaichi Pegasus was appraised as the most valuable thoroughbred in the history of the sport and sold for an astounding 60-million dollars - a record amount, and a figure that was 20-million more than the previous record (Shareef Dancer in 1983). Not bad for a one-time yearling that was sold for a "mere" four-million dollars. His son, Roman Ruler, produced Ruler on Ice, winner of the 2011 Belmont Stakes.
