While the Hindenburg is remembered for its fateful final voyage, the flight to North America on May 6-9, 1936 was not the ship's first passenger flight. As early as March of that year, it embarked on a trip to South America and the Hindenburg contained many passengers as well as a great deal of mail. This envelope was carried on the doomed vessel and contains several New Jersey postmarks from 1936. The words "via Airship Hindenburg" are written on top and it also contains five canceled stamps. The lot comes with a piece of cloth material (painted gray and yellow) that may have come from the Hindenberg. These two items were found together in a frame with no explanation. The material (skin) has a Lakehurst NJ address written on it and two staples.
