John L. Sullivan was the fighter known as the "Boston Strong Boy" and remains one of the most popular boxers the world has ever known. This extremely rare, "Hold to the Light" card is from 1889 and made available through Kinney Brothers Cigarettes. It is in EX condition and includes this description below the illustration: "HERE IS A PORTRAIT OF JOHN L. / A MIGHTY MAN IS HE / BUT IF HE WORE HIS HAIR CUT LONG / HOW DIFFERENT HE WOULD BE / HOLD TO THE LIGHT AND YOU WILL SEE," as Samson-like locks appear. Sullivan was known as the first heavyweight champion of gloved boxing, from 1881 to 1892.
