John L. Sullivan was the last of the great bare knuckle heavyweight champions. He was the dominant fighter in the 1880’s and held his title for ten years defending it against the likes of Paddy Ryan, Charlie Mitchell and Jake Kilrain. He lost the title in 1892 to the slick boxing James J. Corbett in one of the more notable fights in boxing history, being the first heavyweight championship fight to be decided with gloves. Offered here is a 3 page hand written letter by John L. Sullivan dated May 23rd, 1913. On the third page he has boldly signed his name twice in fountain pen. Sullivan discusses his pet dog in some detail in this beautifully hand written document on U.S.Grant Hotel stationary. Quite scarce and especially so with two signatures. Excellent condition with bold ink signatures.
