Bill Richmond (1763-1829) was born as a slave on Staten Island NY. He became one of Boxing's most accomplished and respected fighters of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Known as the "Black Terror" Richmond fought many times in England against opponents such as Tom Cribb, George Moore, Paddy Green and Frank Mayers. Richmond then became a trainer for Thomas Molineaux, a freed slave that went to England to pursue Boxing. John Jackson is discussed at length in a similar lot in this catalog. Presented here is a receipt dated March 26, 1814 and signed "Wm Richmond" for his fight against Jack Davies which was held on May 3, 1814 and which Richmond won in 13 rounds. Davies has also signed a separate receipt made out on the same page below that of Richmond and dated April 16, 1814. Incredibly, all of the writing on the page, notwithstanding the aforementioned signatures, is in the hand of Richmond's fellow Hall of Famer John Jackson. Jackson promoted and ran the fight, and he has added his signature within the content of these "I-owe-you" receipts he has diligently made out to keep record of money advanced to the two fighters. Until the recent discovery of a small cache of early 19th century pugilist signatures in an archives in England, it was thought that no Richmond autographs existed. This document originated from that remarkable find and it represents the only known autograph of Bill Richmond and one of less than five such documents bearing John Jackson's writing and signature. One horizontal fold in the center and some minor chipping on the right edge. The writing is bold and easy to read.
