Wire photographs (6) from the 1920's and 1930s of Jack Johnson, former heavyweight champion of the world. Photos range in size from 6 1/4" x 8 1/2" to 11 1/4" x 8". Photos range from EX to NRMT. Johnson was the first African American to win the title back in 1908. One of the photos dating to 1944 shows Johnson dressed in a suit mock sparring with Jess Willard, who beat Johnson to win the heavyweight title in Cuba back in 1915. Another photo of Johnson from 1946 contains a wire caption that announces the former champ has just died earlier in the day from injuries sustained in an automobile crash. There is also a photo of the deceased Johnson as he lies in state with a cue of friends paying their respects.
