Kiwi heavyweight and Ernest Hemingway fishing buddy, Tom Heeney, unsuccessfully contended for the world championship in 1928. In that title fight he lost in the eleventh round to Gene Tunney. This is a superb lot of (48) news service and San Francisco Examiner staff photographs covering the run up to that bout and more. The condition of the lot ranges from EX to MT with a large percentage on the better end. Sized from 2x8" to 9x15". Includes: (30) 6 x 8.5" NM/MT news service images of Heeney training for the Tunney fight in June of 1928 and training in 1929. Other standout images: remarkable (NM) 8x12" original newspaper cartoon art of Heeney from 1928; 9x15" Examiner front sports page mock up featuring a large, seated image of Heeney from 1928. News service photos all have their original caption sheets attached.
