Way before Ali came along and stirred up Americans came the even bolder heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson. Photo shows Johnson in a hat folded in a most unusual way standing next to his wife Lucille. They are posed as Napoleon and Josephine, the reason for the folded hat. Lucille was his second wife of three. All were white which had lots of people hopping mad. Their premarital relationship led to his indictment under the Mann Act and caused them to flee to France soon after they were wed. Photo (6-3/8 x 4-5/8") was shot on September 13, 1912 by the Stanley Park Photographers in Vancouver. On mount, which has some minor damage on the right side.
