The images we all know of Shoeless Joe Jackson is that of a baseball player. Most of those freezeframe him in the uniform of the 1919 Chicago White Sox. We all know the story, so it’s not worth dredging the Black Sox thing up again. What we don’t often see is the man minus baseball. In 1929, Joe and his wife Katie went home to Greenville, South Carolina for good. They lived at the same address until Joe’s death in 1951. Posed in front of their home at 119 East Wilburn Avenue are Joe and Katie in the late 1940’s. Their expressions seem to tell the whole story of baseball’s greatest injustice. Banned for life. These 4 X 6 1/2” photos are pristine with the words “given to Joe Anders by Gertrude Trameel, Joe Jackson’s sister” on the reverse in black ballpoint. Great baseball history on a personal level.
