In 1941 Smith received his Heisman trophy two days after Pearl Harbor. That same year he was also voted the best college player in the All-Star game at Chicago. He was captain of two of Coach Bernie Bierman’s greatest teams in ’40 and ’41. Both squads won the National Championship and went undefeated. He was elected to the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame in 1972.
