Blank check for use by one of Jackie Robinson’s pet causes in the early ‘60s, the Student Emergency Fund, with Jackie’s signature along with that of his co-Chairman, Marian Logan, both in blue ink. Signatures NRMT as is the yellow check with the word “void” written at the top. Also included are a blank, 7.25 x 8.5” sheet of Student Emergency Fund stationery (VG w/mild foxing around the edges and a middle fold) and an 8.5 x 11” fund-raising letter (EX-MT) explaining that the organization hoped to finance scholarships for students who while protesting for civil rights in the South had gotten expelled from school. Dramatically, it reads, “[we’ve] been sending books, cigarettes and candies” to those students “Who have chosen jail rather than pay fines for sitting at lunch counters.” Fascinating Robinson sidelight, rarely written about.
