A secondary outrage of baseball’s long era of segregation was that popular and endearing men like Roy Campanella were denied the right to earn money off the diamond. However, once the barrier was down it didn’t take long for Madison Avenue to come a-callin’. Witness this Gillette contract signed by Campy and dated July 15, 1952, giving the razor blade company the right to use his name and/or image for a period of one year. The signature of the beloved and photogenic Brooklyn catcher is in black steel tip fountain pen, grading an 8/10, marred only by the fact that the page was folded across the autograph, producing some ink loss. The handwritten address 114-10 179th St. in St. Albans, N.Y. is underneath, as is a witness’ signature. 8.5 x 11” page is EX+ w/1 vertical and 2 horizontal folds, incidental creasing of the borders and a staple mark on the upper left. 2 binding holes on the top.
