The top middleweight contender during the 1960’s, Rubin Carter was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison before he ever got the chance at a title. It wasn’t until 1985 that Carter was freed from jail after a judge ruled that he did not receive a fair trial. The story of “Hurricane” Carter is a controversial one, and his legacy is still debated in boxing circles to this day. This pair of brown, leather “Spartan” heavy bag training gloves traveled with him daily to the Market Street Gym. The leather is dry and cracked on the palm with a small hole in each thumb. Shows tremendous use and due to being stored, would benefit from a light cleaning. They came directly from Carter’s son.
