The top middleweight contender during the 1960’s, Rubin Carter was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison before he ever got the chance at a title. It wasn’t until 1985 that Carter was freed from jail after a judge ruled that he did not receive a fair trial. The story of “Hurricane” Carter is a controversial one, and his legacy is still debated in boxing circles to this day.
