Certainly one of the rarest photographs of "the Black Babe Ruth" to be found anywhere, showing an obviously contented Gibson decked out in a snazzy 3-piece suit and fedora, diggin' the scene with a gangsta lean. Surrounded by a posse of similarly well-dressed teammates and officials during one of his stays in the Puerto Rican Winter League, Gibson is captured in this extraordinary 5 x 7" shot from the late '30s at a carefree moment, one of many he found on the island where fans revered him and where he could go about the pleasures of his life -- baseball, women, booze and dope -- without a hassle. He could even shed the uniform and the suit and walk around in the buff, although that did lead to his arrest on one occasion at the San Juan airport. Photo is VG with a subtle sepia toning lending a nice vintage look. That spit-eating grin on Gibson's face makes us wonder what goodies were on his agenda that day.
