Buried treasures are unearthed from the earliest game of organized baseball in America. Grass Roots baseball (1850’s-70’s) produced this lemon peel baseball. A remarkable 19th century relic, it is still completely intact with no separations along the seams. These are usually not found in such nice condition, slight cracking and patches worn off the leather surface on one of the 4 panels. The glove, too is a fascinating baseball fossil. Its thinly lined leather palm is worn, showing most wear in the palm, where the miniature baseballs were caught. Back of the glove is a thin layer of cloth. This rudimentary glove did not provide much protection of the hand, but then again the balls they were using were much smaller. Glove is completely intact.
