Presented is a full ticket to the September 16, 1961, American Football League game at Nickerson Field, in Boston, Massachusetts, between the home Boston Patriots and the visiting Denver Broncos. This game was the second game of the season for both squads. The Patriots won 45-17. That season, the Patriots, under head coaches Lou Saban (2-3-0) and Mike Holovak (7-1-1) finished the season at 9-4-1, for second place in the AFL's East Division. Patriots quarterback Butch Songin was 13-26, with 206 yards passing in this Sept. 16th contest, and he had four touchdown throws. Gino Cappelletti caught a touchdown pass for Boston, and kicked a field goal and four extra points.
The full ticket measures 1.75x5". It reads, in part, "DENVER BRONCOS/BOSTON PATRIOTS at B.U. Field/BOSTON, MASS./SEPT. 16, 1961/WEST END ZONE/UNRESERVED/ADMIT ONE/TOTAL $2.50." Printed on back, by an unknown hand in blue ballpoint ink, is "10." The Patriots would eventually join the National Football League and become the New England Patriots, to much success, with six Super Bowl Championships. This full ticket makes a fine remembrance of the Patriots' early years. The ticket shows some slight darkening, but is in overall EXCELLENT condition.
