"We're gonna win the game. I guarantee it," said New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath at the Miami, Florida, Touchdown Club three days before Super Bowl III. Presented is a program from Super Bowl III, held at the Orange Bowl on Jan. 12, 1969, when in one of professional sports greatest upsets, the Jets backed up Namath's boast and defeated the Baltimore Colts 16-7. Super Bowl III was actually the first Super Bowl to be officially known by that name. The Green Bay Packers won the first two championship games between the NFL and AFL, and those games were then officially called NFL-AFL Championship Games. In 1969, the Colts had a 13-1 regular season record, and had defeated the Minnesota Vikings 24-14 in the NFL Western Conference Championship Game and the Cleveland Browns, 34-0, in the NFL Championship Game. The Jets defeated the Oakland Raiders 27-23 in the AFL Championship Game. The Colts' regular defense up to the Super Bowl featured frequent blitzes and the Jets, very adept at hitting the tight end or a running back when expecting a blitz, had an offense that could carve up a blitzing defense.

At that time, most fans and media members considered the NFL as far superior to the AFL. During the week prior to Super Bowl III, the Jets ranged as between 18 and 19-and-a-half point underdogs. The Orange Bowl had 75,389 fans, with most assuming a Baltimore victory. In Super Bowl III, the Jets used running backs Matt Snell and Emerson Boozer to run left against the right side of the Colts defense, older and slower than the Baltimore left side. Jets wide receiver Don Maynard had a hamstring injury, and he was used as a decoy to draw double coverage, with split end George Sauer exploiting one-on-one coverage for eight catches for 133 yards. The Jets scored on a Matt Snell 4-yard run and three field goals by Jim Turner to open up a 16-0 lead. The starting Colts quarterback, Earl Morrall threw three interceptions and the only Baltimore touchdown was on a John Unitas pass late in the game. Namath completed 17 of 28 passes for 206 yards and was named the game's MVP.

The program measures approx. 8.25x10.8", and it has 120 pages, not including covers. The front cover has an image of Jets receiver Don Maynard, and Colts defensive back, Lenny Lyles, both in the air and going for the unseen football. The program has small photos of all the players and many pages of statistics and stories. The program shows light wear, with some small, light stains, mostly on the front edges of the cover and some minor crinkles at the top of the program's spine, and some small scratches and tiny areas of paper loss on the back cover. Overall, the program is in very good condition, and it provides a detailed remembrance of one of the biggest upsets in professional sports.
