Rare Babe Ruth figural radio produced by Abbotwares in the late 1940s. This radio is nearly identical in design to the Babe Ruth clock, which was also produced by Abbotware, but it is much rarer. In the past twenty-five years, this is only the third example we have ever offered and we have seen few others at auction during that time. The attractive design features a metallic bust of Ruth in the center, flanked by two metallic baseballs. One ball denotes his number of lifetime home runs (714), while the other commemorates his then-record 60 home runs in 1927. Two dials on the front panel control the volume and the station setting, respectively.

We know that the Ruth clock was the first prize in a baseball punchboard game at the time, and it is likely that this radio was similarly available as a prize. It is also possible that both the clock and radio were available for retail sale, but we have not found any advertisements for the pair to corroborate that method of distribution. The radio is complete with its original electrical cord, but we have not plugged it in and tested it to see if it is in working order because we do not want to risk damaging the piece if the electrical wiring is faulty. (We strongly recommend that the winning bidder has it examined by an electrician prior to turning it on.) The radio displays wear commensurate with its age and former use, including a few minor nicks and dings to the base, as well as light tarnishing, but it remains in Excellent condition overall. This is a seldom-seen Ruth piece that would be perfect for display in either home or office. Dimensions: 12x5x10".
