"It ain't over 'til it's over," is a famous Yogi Berra saying, but as far as rapt interest in Yogi Berra memorabilia, it will never be over. Displayed is a great find for any sports fan: A game used Yogi Berra catcher's mitt that is hobby fresh. The 5'8" Hall of Famer was renowned for not looking like a ballplayer; but Yogi could surely play like one - a great one. Berra played 19 MLB seasons: 1946-63 with the New York Yankees, and a brief time as a player-coach with the 1965 New York Mets. He was an 18-time All-Star, a 10-time World Champion, and 3-time AL MVP. He batted a career .285 with 358 home runs. And Berra could also play defense. Who called and caught Don Lasen's perfect game in the '56 World Series? Yogi, of course.
The glove was gifted to a former Major League star of the 1940s and '50s, and consigned by a family member, but the family wishes to remain anonymous. The leather glove is a Spalding Model Number 1457. It is a size 33.0", and it displays evidence of heavy game use. The palm of the glove has alligatored from drying perspiration. There are various places with surface leather loss and various scrapes and surface wear. Berra's number "8" is visible, but fading, on the top of the pinky and ring finger sleeves. A facsimile "Larry 'Yogi' Berra" signature is branded on the lower, palm part of the front of the glove. Lightly branded on the mitt is "Spalding 1457" and "Personal Model." On back is a Spalding manufacturer's tag. Features include a "Form Pocket," a conventional back with a fleece lined wrist strap, and a twin-laced "E-Z Flex" palm hinge. A good portion of the use of the glove may have come after Berra gave the glove away.
The mitt comes with a PSA LOA (Cert. 1G01032) for the authenticity of the glove of the Berra game used mitt, while stating that "The condition of the glove prohibits us from determining the amount of game use to the Yankees iconic Hall of Fame catcher." What sports collection would not be substantially enhanced by the addition of a game used Yogi Berra catcher's mitt, from not only one of baseball's best-ever catchers, but one of the most beloved ballplayers of all-time.
