Babe Ruth used his left-hand to become a tremendous pitcher with the Boston Red Sox, but when it came to signing his name, the Hall of Fame immortal was actually a right-hander. Presented is a Nov. 19, 1935, Babe Ruth signed check. Ruth, the portsider, had a 94-46 career MLB pitching record, with a 2.28 ERA. In 1916, he led the American League in ERA, with 1.75. Later on, usually to draw a crowd, Ruth, then an outfielder, occasionally pitched for the Yankees, and his Yankee pitching record was 5-0. In 1935, he finished his playing career with half a season of play for the National League's Boston Braves. At that time, he was living with his wife, Claire Merritt Ruth, at 110 Riverside Dr. in the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City. His stylish apartment was just across from Riverside Park and the Hudson River.
The Ruth signed check, measuring 3.25x8.5", shows, "Chemical Bank & Trust Company [New York]/73rd STREET AT BROADWAY." The check is made out to "Hubert L. Merritt" (the Babe's brother-in-law) in the amount of $100.00. On the left side, "BABE RUTH" is machine printed. As a boy, Ruth was taught to write right-handed at Baltimore's St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, at a time when natural left-handers were often taught to write right-handed. Using blue fountain pen ink, Ruth penned his gorgeous, flowing signature, signing as "GHRUTH" [with the letters all connected, and the GH for George Herman]. The check has been cashed. It exhibits some minor darkening from the passage of time, and it is in otherwise EXCELLENT condition. The offering has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA CERTIFIED (AUTO GRADE ONLY) as "MINT 9."
