Honus Wagner is one of the five inaugural inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Offered is a Wagner signed check dated June 4, 1919. Born Johannes Peter Wagner, the great shortstop had several nicknames, including Honus, Hans, and "the Flying Dutchman." He played 21 Major League seasons: Louisville Colonels of the National League (1897-99), Pittsburgh Pirates (1900-17). While shortstop was his main position, he played any infield or outfield position. He was an 8-time NL batting champion. A great speedster, he led the NL in stolen bases five times, and he held the NL modern stolen base record (703) until 1927. He was also a 4-time NL RBI leader. Wagner batted a career .328 with 3,420 hits, the National League's highest until 1962.
This current auction has a check signed by each of the five inaugural Hall of Famers: This check by Wagner, plus a signed, separate check from each of the following: Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, and Christy Mathewson. The offered check is written on a bank from Wagner's hometown Carnegie, Pa., the Carnegie National Bank. The check measures 2.75x6.75", and it was made payable to "John Gray" with the subject line of the check reading, "Carnegie House Defense Police," in the amount of "$10.50." The offering is in EXCELLENT condition. It has been cashed. Using blue ink, Wagner signed the check as "J [sic] H. Wagner - Treas." The check has been encapsulated and reads, "PSA/DNA CERTIFIED AUTO GRADE ONLY MINT 9."
