Presented is a 1910s Joe Jackson decal bat. Jackson played in the Major Leagues from 1908-20: Philadelphia Athletics (1908-09), Cleveland Naps (1910-15), Chicago White Sox (1915-20). Born and raised in South Carolina, Jackson had to work in the local mills as a young boy and his lack of schooling made him essentially illiterate for his entire life. He played for mill teams at a young age, and he then advanced to minor league ball. He earned his famous nickname of "Shoeless Joe" because in a minor league game his new pair of spikes were stiff and blistering his feet, so he took off his spikes and played in his socks, and that caused the nickname, one which stuck with him for life. In the 1908 season, Jackson batted .408, still the highest average for a Major League rookie. He had seven seasons in which he batted over .350. An outfielder, he had a lifetime average of .356. In 1919, Jackson was allegedly part of a group of eight White Sox players who met with gamblers who were arranging to fix the '19 World Series so that the Cincinnati Reds would defeat the White Sox to win the World Series. The Reds upset the favored White Sox, and after the 1920 season, Jackson and the other seven Chicago players were banned from baseball for life, even though they had been acquitted of fixing the World Series by a jury. Jackson was so admired for his hitting that Babe Ruth stated that he had modeled his swing after that of Joe Jackson.

The offered bat has a label which reads, "LOUISVILLE SLUGGER 40 J.J. J.E. HILLERICH & SON Co./LOUISVILLE, KY." The bat is termed a decal bat because the upper barrel has a multi-colored LOUISVILLE SLUGGER decal, approx. 4.5" in length, used as a trademark. The handle/lower barrel has been taped with the black tape approx. 11.4" in length. The knob, and the top end of the barrel have been worked upon and possibly repaired. The bat exhibits great use, with many ball marks and dents. The bat has been stained or darkened by some means. The bat weighs 39.6 ounces, and it has a length of 33.75".
