Exceedingly rare New York Giants composition doll dating from the circa 1910s. During the early 1900s, these composition dolls, which were all alike in design, were issued in several different team uniforms, including Detroit, Boston, and even a generic Federal League issue. However, we have never seen a New York Giants example, making this perhaps the rarest of all surviving examples. The offered doll is complete as issued, with jersey, pants, socks, shoes, and hat. "Giants" is lettered in brown felt across the front of the jersey. There is slight wear to the composition body, but there are no major chips, as are common for these fragile dolls. Moderate paint loss affects the right eye. The cloth uniform and hat display light foxing, but like the doll itself, display no tears or loss of material. A remarkable example, both in terms of rarity and condition. It should also be noted that this doll originates from the personal collection of noted turn-of-the-century Philadelphia sportswriter William "Billy" Weart, who is also the source for the extraordinary early World Series press pin collection featured in this auction.
