"Rapid Robert" was the nickname for Hall of Fame right-hander Bob Feller, and the nickname was perfect for the fireballer. Displayed is a circa 1940s Bob Feller The Sporting News original photograph of the Iowan who pitched his entire Major League career for the Cleveland Indians. Feller missed almost four full seasons (1942-44 and all but nine games in 1945) because of service in the U.S. Navy, often in combat as a gun captain on a ship in the South Pacific. Yet, Feller still managed a lifetime 266-162 record with a 3.25 ERA. He won the pitching Triple Crown in 1940 when he won 27 games with a 2.61 ERA and 261 strikeouts. Feller was a member of the 1940 World Champions, and he won at least 20 games on six occasions. The offered 8x10" photo depicts Feller's fastball grip, as the flamethrower demonstrates a classic two-finger fastball finger splay. The photo is dated "Sept 14 - 39" on back, written in pencil by an unknown hand. Also, on back, written in pencil by an unknown hand, is "Bob Feller." The Sporting News stamp is also on the verso. The photo shows about a half inch cut from the upper left corner, and some wear on the upper right corner. Except for the foregoing imperfections, the photo is in nice condition. The offering has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as "TYPE I AUTHENTIC."
