His consistently excellent play during his 20-year Major League career led to Hall of Fame second baseman Charlie Gehringer being nicknamed "The Mechanical Man." Presented is a circa 1936 Charlie Gehringer Detroit Tigers original Type I photo by famed photographer Charles Conlon. A left-handed swinger, Gehringer played his entire Major League career with the Detroit Tigers, compiling a .320 lifetime batting average with 184 homers. He led the American League in batting in 1937, hitting .371, and was selected as the AL MVP. An all-around player, he was a defensive standout who on his retirement had 1,444 double plays turned at second base (then first of MLB all-time and now 7th all-time) and Gehringer is still in second place on the all-time list of assists for a second baseman with 7,068. He was a key part of the 1935 Detroit World Champions. The black & white photo measures 6.5x8.3". It has been encapsulated and PSA Certified (Cert. Number 85274510) as "TYPE I AUTHENTIC." On back, an unknown hand has written, in pencil, "Charlie Gehringer - Detroit/Conlon Photo." The photo is in EXCELLENT condition.
