Scarce hand-colored painting on silk commemorating the Heavyweight Championship bout between Jack Johnson and "Fireman Jim" Flynn held in Las Vegas, New Mexico, on July 4, 1912. The colorful illustration features full-figure depictions of each fighter set against the backdrop of the host city. The printed text along the top reads "Johnson-Flynn," with "World's Championship Bout" displayed below in Old English text. The date and fight venue are listed in black lettering near the base. Since each commemorative silk is hand painted, all are slightly different, and therefore unique. This is one of only several such examples of this attractive silk boxing display we have handled in the past twenty-five years and we have seen few others at auction. Johnson dominated the fight right from the start and Flynn, frustrated in his attempts to land any blows, resorted to head butting his taller opponent, a strategy that ultimately caused him to be disqualified in the ninth round. The silk (17x18") displays fold lines, several moderate vertical tears along the left border, adhesive residue along the perimeter from its having once been mounted, and a few light stains (most of the flaws can be concealed by proper matting and framing).
